San
Diego Arts and Culture Scene
The
months of October and November are filled with concerts and theatrical
events taking place in San Diego of special interest to the Italian-American
community.
Italy’s
star of pop and electric blues, Zucchero (“Sugar”) will
make a San Diego appearance on Tuesday, October 16 at the House of Blues,
located in downtown’s Gaslamp Quarter.
Born
Adelmo Fornaciari in 1955 in Reggio Emilia, Zucchero began his musical
career in the late 1970s and quickly rose to fame with a series of hits
made popular at various Italian music festivals. In 1983 he recorded
his first studio album entitled, Un Po di Zucchero. He competed at the
San Remo Festival with the hit song, Donne, and produced an album, Rispetto,
which topped the charts upon release.
Zucchero
was key in introducing a blend of Italian pop and electric blues to
the masses. During the late '80s and early '90s, he became one of the
best-selling artists in Italy and a favorite all over Europe. He performed
at the 1994 Woodstock Festival and appeared with Eric Clapton, Buddy
Guy, the Scorpions, and Sheryl Crow, among others.
In
1992, Zucchero and Luciano Pavarotti together devised the concept of
the Pavarotti & Friends charity gala. This concert, broadcast live
around the world, was the first in a series of benefit concerts that
are now held annually.
