San
Diego’s Art & Culture Scene
Welk
Resort Theatre in Escondido presents, “I Left My Heart, A Salute
to the Music of Tony Bennett” Frank Sinatra once called Tony Bennett,
“The Greatest Singer in the World.” To be sure, the music
of Anthony Dominick Benedetto continues to make its mark on the world,
as does Tony himself who, now at 81 years of age, has nine concerts
on the books for the month of June alone!
While
we won’t see the real Tony Bennett anytime soon in the San Diego
region, the current production at the Welk Resorts Theatre in Escondido,
which pays tribute to Bennett and the songs he immortalized, is exceptional
in many ways. The trio of outstanding male tenors, accompanied by a
tasty live band of four accomplished musicians, blends the history of
Bennett’s rise to fame over the past four decades with excellent
renditions of his most popular songs.
The
vocal harmonies of the trio are exceptional, as they take the audience
on a musical journey of great Bennett song hits by some of America’s
most endeared composers. “The Best is Yet to Come,” “The
Good Life,” “Rags to Riches,” “Boulevard of
Broken Dreams,” and, of course, “I Left My Heart in San
Francisco” are just a few of the songs included in this highly
entertaining and melodious show.
The
live band complements the group beautifully (enhanced by excellent solos
by the trumpeter) and emphasizes the critical role live music plays
on the stage for the ultimate in musical entertainment experience. You
will not hear canned music on the Welk Stage. The combination of vocals
with the live band is a show that will definitely delight any Tony Bennett
fan--and take one right down memory lane at the same time!

Dreams: The Art of the Pre-Raphaelites from the Delaware Art Museum
Now through July 29, 2007, the San Diego Museum of Art will feature
the Art of the Pre-Raphaelites. This enchanting exhibition features
approximately 130 works from the largest and most prestigious collection
of Pre-Raphaelite art outside of Great Britain. It includes paintings,
decorative arts, jewelry, and more from some of the most significant
artists of the era.
Several
works from Dante Gabriel Rossetti will be on display at this exhibition.
The poet, painter, and designer (1828-)1882, was a cofounder of the
PRE-RAPHAELITES, a group of English painters and poets who hoped to
bring to their art the richness and purity of the medieval period. Rossetti
was the son of the exiled Italian patriot and scholar Gabriele Rossetti
and a brother of the poet Christina Rossetti.
