The Festa di San Gennaro is one of the oldest and most popular traditions that originated in Naples. Italy almost two thousand years ago.
San Gennaro was the Bishop of Benevento (a city only a few miles N-E of Naples) when he was beheaded during Emperor Diocletian’s persecution of Christians in 305 A.D. – At that time the city was mostly pagan. Some of the martyr’s blood was collected by a woman, Eusebia, and taken to Naples.
The dried blood is stored in a small ampoule held in a silver reliquary in Naples Cathedral.
San Gennaro, patron of Naples, is famous for the miracle that has been occurring every year since his death on September 19, 305 A.C. The miracle consists of the liquefaction of the saint’s blood that was saved in an ampoule. The devotion for San Gennaro in most sincere and spread everywhere in the world especially where Italians of Neapolitan origins live. This year Tony DeBruno’s 32nd performance of the “Festa di San Gennaro” will have more meaning than ever because on October 15, 2011 he and his charming wife Antonietta will celebrate the 50th anniversary of their matrimony.
The Italian community wishes to extend to dear friends Tony & Antonietta congratulations and sincere wishes for many more years in good health and love.
