Commissione Giovani: a new chapter in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Good news from Commissione Giovani! The organization seems to be growing all over the United States and a new chapter is now active in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Which means there are many Italians and Italian-Americans willing to work hard to promote their culture, not only in the biggest cities of the U.S.

“One of the main goals of the Commissione Giovani project” said Alessandro Chiaro, CG USA “is to open, maintain and grow a network of uniquely different people whom have a love of the Italian influence.
Commissione Giovani Pittsburgh came about as proof that this network has begun growing. Gina Mazzotta is our person on the ground in Pittsburgh, but her CG story begins in New York. Gina was one of our members in there. I believe she valued the interaction and cultural experience she found as a member”.

In fact, once back in Pittsburgh, Gina decided to recreate a network of young Italians and Italian-Americans. “Pittsburgh is a little different than other cities that have a CG presence”, she commented. “While Pittsburgh is a city full of great Universities, and there are many Italians throughout the city who are here to study and end up staying, a lot of the young Italian presence is Italian-American—second or third generation Italians whose grandparents came for work opportunities when the city was booming.

I see my generation of Italian Americans not as connected with the culture, as they have fewer opportunities to participate in these kinds of activities. Through my contacts throughout the city, and my relationship with the Italian Departments at the local universities, I want to invite these young people to participate in CG Pittsburgh, and give them the opportunity to learn about and actively participate in their culture. We just had our first “meet and greet” aperitivo, which was very successful!”
