Activities in Portland at Christmas time
There is a fervor of activities at this time of the year around Portland. The various Italian organizations, are quietly organizing and contributing to the various charities and initiatives, more important than ever this year as we are facing high unemployment and financial woes.
Club Paesano celebrated its Christmas party on December 13th, along with the introduction of new members and the selection of the Man of the Year. Amici d’Italia had the election of officers on December 3rd followed by the annual potluck Christmas party on December the 5th. The UNICO chapter, under the presidency of JoAnn Gallo, is gaining accep- tance and followers. For information call (503) 481-1119 or e-mail Joanngallo29@yahoo.com.
The Tuscan Association of Oregon is still alive and very active with cultural programs and historical lectures. Recently they introduced the presentation of life experiences by members which has generated an enormous interest. In September Joe Cavalli, Vice President of the Tuscan Association, received a gold medal from the City of Lucca. The prestigious award is reserved for the descendants of people from Lucca who have honored the city around the world. The Portland-Bologna Sister City Association continues its program of exchanges, especially in the field of education.
These exchanges are very beneficial to young Italian-Americans who are afforded the opportunity of discovering new people and new ways of life abroad. Italian-Americans are active and ever present in all facets of Portland life, and are definitely a big asset to the community.
On behalf of all the Italian-American Organizations of the Greater Portland-Vancouver area we wish all readers the Merriest of Christmas and a very Special and Happy New Year!
