Remembrance Day – 8000 Names to Commemorate the Shoah
A new initiative has been announced in the occasion of the Remembrance Day, established in 2000 by the Italian Parliament to mark the demolition of the gates to Auschwitz.
The Consulate General of Italy and the Italian Cultural Institute of Los Angeles, together with the AJC American Jewish Committee, have organized a reading of almost 8000 names of the Jews deported from Italy and the Italian territories. The event will take place simultaneously in different venues, on January 26; at the moment, the locations confirmed are the gardens of the Los Angeles Holocaust Museum and the Milken Community High School in downtown.
The same celebration took place the last year in New York, organized by the Consulate General in collaboration with the Centro Primo Levi. Despite a heavy storm that caused problems all over the city, the commemoration of the Remembrance Day went on as scheduled. The 2012 event in Los Angeles is in collaboration with Los Angeles Holocaust Museum, Milken Community High School, USC Shoah Foundation Institute and Centro Primo Levi.
