F.I.L. "triumphs" on Italian proverbs

On Sunday, August 21, 2011 at 3 p.m. at Sarducci in San Juan Capistrano, Families of Italian Lineage presented an Italian cultural presentation which was interesting, informative, and at times funny. Prof. Giulia Cabiglio first gave a background and history of PROVERBS in general and their usage in different sections of Italy. She presented Italian Proverbs and their English translation.

Each member received a copy of the proverbs so that those who could not read Italian could still enjoy and understand the English translation. This popular Italian Club again was successful in filling the reserved room capacity. Many were surprised to recognize the fact that so many English proverbs originate from the Italian version.

Among the favorites of those present were the following: L’uomo propone e Dio dispone, Man proposes and God disposes. Meglio un uovo oggi che la gallina domani, A bird in hand is worth two in the bush. Dimmi con chi vai e ti dirò chi sei. Tell me with whom you go and I’ll tell you who you are. Al bisogno si conosce l’amico. A friend in need is a friend indeed. Chi dà per ricevere, non dà nulla. Who gives to receive, gives nothing. Chi la fa, l’aspetti. If you do evil, expect evil.

Some of the proverbs are NOT literal translations, but they are the English counterpart. After the presentation the members enjoyed dinner. F.I.L.’s next event will be a catered picnic at Regional Park in Laguna Niguel in September 18, 2011. For information: (949) 363-5348
