Dear
Readers,
October, Italian Heritage Month is a good time to introduce you to Robert
De Feo, publisher of Northern California’s newly launched
magazine of Italian culture, In Buona Salute. His Italian “roots”
are in the Province of Campobasso, Regione Molise.
He
is a first generation Italian American and notes:
“On January 14, 1960 Nonno e Nonna, along with Mamma e Zia Rosalia,
arrived in New York aboard the ship Cristoforo Colombo, from Italy.
Prior to that, a few of our extended family members had traveled back
and forth, working mainly as tailors and seamstresses on the east coast.
One great-aunt, Zia Nannina, was 11 when she made the journey alone
in 1916 to join her father in America. Today we are truly a family of
two cultures, with relatives in Roma, Pescara, Campobasso, and the United
States.
As
a first generation Italian American I have always embraced my heritage
with a deep passion and pride. My Nonno had a profound impact on my
youth and although he has been gone for a long time now, his memory
lives with me daily, as do his traditions.
As
a publisher and an Italian American, it is the culmination of my career
to produce a high quality magazine that communicates and celebrates
our culture and heritage. In Buona Salute – In Good Health –
is exactly that. Our 64 page, bi-monthly magazine will cover all things
Italian, with a true focus on the history and influence within the local
community. We look forward to sharing your family stories, history,
photos and recipes.
In
Buona Salute Magazine is designed to be an advocate for our community
and a voice for Italian Americans in Northern California. To celebrate
our launch and our roots, we are establishing a scholarship fund in
the name of Carlo & Maria Coloccia, “i miei nonni”,
to benefit education resources for Italian Americans. The magazine will
only be successful with your subscription.”
